Warning by UN Special Rapporteur Mai Sato on the Escalating Human Rights Crisis in Iran

Mai Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, stated that following military attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, the humanitarian situation has worsened. According to reports, more than a thousand civilians have been killed, while disruptions to telecommunications, the lack of safe shelters in many cities, and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of families have increased concerns about civilian safety.

She also emphasized that despite repeated requests, she has not yet been granted permission to travel to Iran to conduct a field assessment of the human rights situation.

The report also اشارهs the rise in executions in 2025, pressure on the families of those killed and detained, attacks on medical centers, and the arrest of injured protesters.

According to Mai Sato, there have been numerous reports of protesters being shot at close range, severe beatings, mass arrests, and forced confessions. Some detainees, including individuals under the age of 18, are also facing the risk of death sentences.

Mai Sato presented this report to the United Nations Human Rights Council, warning about the worsening human rights crisis in Iran amid rising military tensions.

She called on Iranian authorities to immediately end the excessive use of force against civilians, release those detained for exercising fundamental freedoms, restore unrestricted access to the internet, and allow civil society to operate freely.
