According to the Balochistan Human Rights Group, on Monday, 11, December 2023 the civil registration office of Rask County objected to the naming of an infant by their parents who intended to choose the authentic Baloch name ‘Boheer,’ meaning dignified, for their child.

The administration’s refusal to issue the birth certificate might lead to complications for children without proper identification in accessing vaccines and other necessities.

It is noteworthy that the civil registration office acts based on a manual of names compiled by the government, deeming any names outside the listed ones in this manual as unauthorized.

The limitations and imposed political and religious views within this manual practically deprive many citizens, such as the Baloch people, from naming their children based on their religious, national, or cultural identities, contrary to human rights conventions.

It is worth mentioning that Article 7, Clause 1 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states: ‘The child shall be registered immediately after birth and shall have the right from birth to a name, the right to acquire a nationality, and, as far as possible, the right to know and be cared for by his or her parents.
