Nasser Boladai: The Islamic Republic Targets Its Opponents Abroad Through Intimidation and Threats<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Balochistan Human Rights Group, today, Monday, September 21, 2026, a side event of the United Nations Human Rights Council on the topic of \u201cTransnational Repression by the Islamic Republic of Iran\u201d was held in Geneva. Nasser Boladai, Secretary-General of the Balochistan People\u2019s Party, addressed the meeting, speaking about his personal experience and the broader dimensions of repression against opponents, political activists, and human rights defenders outside Iran. The event was attended by human rights activists and experts, as well as Mai Sato, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, and Sara Hossain, Chair of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his remarks, Boladai, referring to his personal experience, said that the repression of the Islamic Republic is not limited by Iran\u2019s geographical borders. He stated that political activists and human rights defenders may continue to face surveillance, intimidation, propaganda, the deliberate creation of mistrust, pressure on family members, and, in more serious cases, threats of abduction and assassination even after leaving the country. He emphasized that the objective of such measures is not always the physical elimination of individuals, but rather making political and human rights activities increasingly difficult and dangerous and creating conditions in which individuals gradually become discouraged from continuing their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boladai also described his experience working within the Baloch community in Europe and said that, in 2003, he received information about efforts by individuals linked to Iran\u2019s intelligence apparatus to collect information about Baloch activists and their networks in Sweden. According to him, part of these activities was aimed at creating suspicion and divisions among Baloch refugees and activists, as fostering mistrust within a diaspora community can disrupt political and human rights activities and isolate individuals without the need for arrests or direct attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Referring to another experience in 2015, he said that the Swedish Security Service informed him of a threat to his life from individuals linked to the Islamic Republic of Iran and discussed measures to increase his security, including the possibility of changing his place of residence and workplace. Boladai described this experience as an example of the difference between the use of security institutions to protect individuals in a democratic society and the use of security structures to create threats against opponents in the Islamic Republic. He emphasized that security and human rights are not necessarily in conflict with one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Secretary-General of the Balochistan People\u2019s Party concluded by emphasizing that transnational repression should be treated as an international human rights issue. He said that protecting human rights defenders outside Iran should not be limited to protection against physical threats, but should also address surveillance, intimidation, disinformation, pressure on family members, and efforts to create divisions within diaspora communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stated that activists should be able to continue their work after leaving their country without fear of the Islamic Republic\u2019s security apparatus, emphasizing that when repression crosses borders, international efforts to defend human rights must cross borders as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
