According to the Balochistan Human Rights Group, citing HRANA, Branch 23 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court issued a death sentence today, Saturday, 25 July 2026, against Isa Chari, a 37-year-old political prisoner from Aqqala and the father of two young children. The sentence was handed down amid repeated concerns raised by human rights organisations regarding the handling of security-related cases, restrictions on defendants’ access to fair trial guarantees, and the imposition of death sentences in such cases.
Isa Chari, a Baloch labourer originally from Golestan Province, had been working at a poultry farm near Varamin to support his family before his arrest. He was detained on 7 December 2025 by intelligence forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and is currently being held in Suite 35 of Unit 3 at Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj. Branch 23 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Mohammad Mehdi Shahmirzadi, sentenced him to death on charges including “membership in the Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK)” and “anti-state security activities.”
Earlier, the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor of Qarchak had alleged that Isa Chari was “one of the destabilising elements affiliated with groups based outside the country” and claimed that he had engaged in “activities against national security.” Reports also indicate that Unit 3 of Qezel Hesar Prison houses prisoners sentenced to death, while its high-security suites are typically used to detain political prisoners and individuals accused in security-related cases under solitary or highly isolated conditions.
The Balochistan Human Rights Group expressed serious concern over the continued issuance of death sentences in political and security-related cases. It emphasised that, under Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the right to life is a fundamental human right, and that the death penalty may be imposed only in the most exceptional circumstances and following a fully fair trial conducted in accordance with international standards.
Human rights organisations have repeatedly called on the Islamic Republic of Iran to halt the implementation of death sentences\u2014particularly in political and security-related cases\u2014and to guarantee defendants’ rights to a fair trial, access to independent legal counsel, and impartial judicial proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
