{"id":4529,"date":"2025-12-12T20:48:40","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T20:48:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bhrg.info\/en\/?p=4529"},"modified":"2025-12-12T20:48:40","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T20:48:40","slug":"mai-sato-goli-kouhkans-freedom-must-not-distract-us-from-structural-injustices-against-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bhrg.info\/en\/mai-sato-goli-kouhkans-freedom-must-not-distract-us-from-structural-injustices-against-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Mai Sato: &#8220;Goli Kouhkan&#8217;s Freedom Must Not Distract Us From Structural Injustices Against Women&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Mai Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran, announced that <strong>Goli Kouhkan<\/strong>, a woman whose execution had previously been halted following a request by her and other UN experts, <strong>has been released<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She stated that while the payment of <em>diya<\/em> (blood money) and the saving of this prisoner&#8217;s life is a hopeful measure, the &#8220;<strong>institutional and structural injustices<\/strong>&#8221; that brought Kouhkan to the brink of execution still persist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her statement, Sato recalled that Goli Kouhkan was <strong>forced into marriage as a child<\/strong> and had been subjected to <strong>years of domestic violence<\/strong>\u2014violence that is still not effectively criminalized in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the UN Special Rapporteur, Kouhkan&#8217;s case reflects a <strong>widespread pattern of discrimination against women<\/strong> within Iran&#8217;s judicial system. Between 2010 and 2024, at least <strong>241 women have been executed<\/strong> in Iran, and in <strong>114 cases<\/strong>, women convicted of murdering their husband or partner were themselves <strong>victims of domestic violence, child marriage, or acting in self-defense<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sato emphasized that the extensive global attention on this case, including coverage in international media like <em>The Guardian<\/em>, must not lead to the neglect of the fate of <strong>dozens of other women<\/strong> whose cases are never seen or heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She concluded by referencing the <strong>conflict between the <em>qisas<\/em> (retribution) system and international human rights standards<\/strong>, calling for the <strong>complete abolition of the death penalty<\/strong> and the provision of effective mechanisms to protect women&#8217;s rights in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bhrg.info\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4477\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mai Sato, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran, announced that Goli Kouhkan, a woman whose execution had previously been halted following a request by her and other UN experts, has been released.
