According to the Balochistan Human Rights Group, on Thursday, March 20, 2025, a Baloch prisoner in Adelabad Prison, Shiraz, lost his life due to cardiac arrest and a lack of timely medical attention. The prisoner, who had been in detention since 2021 on drug-related charges, was being held in the prison’s general ward without a final verdict, remaining in a state of legal uncertainty.

The identity of the prisoner has been reported as Karim Rigi , 55 years old, son of Ata Mohammad, married, and a father of five, originally from Zahedan.

According to the report, Karim Rigi experienced severe pain before his death and was transferred to the prison infirmary. However, due to a lack of medical treatment, a shortage of specialized staff in the infirmary, and delays in obtaining a hospital transfer permit from the prison oversight judge, he passed away in the infirmary before being transferred to a medical center.

This incident occurred despite Article 113 of the Executive Regulations of the Prison Organization, which obliges prison officials to provide appropriate medical services to prisoners and, if external medical treatment is necessary, to coordinate with a trusted doctor and judicial authorities. Additionally, Article 505 of the Criminal Procedure Code states that detainees must be processed and have their legal status determined as soon as possible. Failure to adhere to these regulations constitutes a clear violation of prisoners’ rights and disregards legal provisions designed to protect their lives.
