On Tuesday, December 17, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning human rights violations in Iran with 80 votes in favor, 27 against, and 68 abstentions.

In this resolution, UN member states strongly criticized the “execution and imprisonment on charges of apostasy and blasphemy” in the Islamic Republic of Iran. They also condemned the execution of ethnic and religious minorities, as well as women.

The countries supporting this resolution called on Iranian authorities to cooperate with the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran. They urged Iranian officials to facilitate the visit of Ms. Mai Sato to Iran and to be held accountable for their unlawful actions.

The resolution also called on the Iranian government to end the persecution and discrimination against dissidents and minorities, arbitrary detentions, and inhumane and degrading treatment of prisoners.
