The Friday Prayer Leader of Zahedan reacted to the rise in executions in a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“Despite calls to stop the death penalty, executions have recently increased. Unfortunately, most of those executed, who are Baloch and Kurdish, are denied fair trials and Islamic compassion. These executions only lead to more public dissatisfaction.”
Reports say that on Sunday morning, December 15, 2024, 9 Baloch citizens and 1 Kurdish citizen were executed in the prisons of Yazd and Zahedan. These executions once again show the harsh policies against the Baloch and Kurdish communities.
In 2023, at least 184 Baloch prisoners were executed in 26 cities across Iran, with the highest numbers in Zahedan and Birjand prisons. Among those executed were at least four women.
