On Thursday evening, October 17, 2024, a Baloch prisoner in Zabol prison lost his life due to a lack of adequate medical care. The prisoner, identified as Noor Ali Kouhkan, 42 years old and a resident of the village of Bezi in Nimrouz County, had been sentenced to ten years in prison on charges of involvement in a kidnapping. Reports indicate that Noor Ali had suffered several heart attacks during his imprisonment, yet prison authorities and medical staff failed to provide him with the necessary medical attention.
He eventually experienced another heart attack and severe shortness of breath, and due to the negligence of the prison medical staff, his condition worsened, leading to his death. It has been reported that following his death, prison officials transferred his body to the morgue without informing his family. The family only learned of his passing through other inmates.
The failure to provide necessary medical services to prisoners and the neglect of their health conditions represent a serious violation of human rights. Prison authorities are obligated to ensure the safety and well-being of those in custody. This incident underscores the urgent need for reforms in the judicial and prison systems to protect the human rights of detainees.
