UN Human Rights Committee Expresses Concern Over Violations Against Minorities in Iran
According to the Balochistan Human Rights Group, the UN Human Rights Committee has expressed serious concerns about widespread human rights violations by Iranian security forces during the protests of November 2019, July 2021, and September 2022. These violations have particularly affected regions predominantly inhabited by ethnic and religious minorities, such as the Baloch. The Committee has called on Iran to conduct impartial investigations into these allegations and to provide reparations to the victims.
Additionally, the Committee has raised concerns about the high rates of arbitrary detention and death sentences imposed on ethnic and religious minorities, especially for drug-related offenses. The Committee urged Iran to review its legal framework, repeal vague laws that lead to the death penalty, and to impose a moratorium on executions with the ultimate goal of abolishing the death penalty entirely.
