Last Friday, Mukhtar Balochzehi (Jedgal), a social media activist and comedian from Chabahar, passed away due to thalassemia. Mukhtar was 22 years old and originally from Zirakabad village in Nikshahr.

Despite medical advancements that can enable a normal life for thalassemia patients, Mukhtar died due to inadequate treatment and the lack of medical facilities in Sistan and Balochistan.

Many thalassemia patients in this province die because of blood shortages and insufficient medical care. Familial marriages and the lack of necessary pre-marital testing also contribute to the high number of children born with thalassemia in the region, making Sistan and Balochistan the province with the highest number of blood-related disorders in Iran.
